Final Presentation Errors

Well, I am nearly complete with this final project.

It still has several errors:
*Frame 170 is corrupt and I cannot fix it.
*There is a slight wiggle between frames 45-285. I have tried to line everything up correctly, but the wiggle remains.
*hyperlinks to the World Health Organization and Bureau of Meoterology do not connect correctly.
*The introduction text is supposed to increase in illumination between frames 10-20 and then remain visible frames 25-45. The intro text is only visible on frame 10.

Lab 10

I want to do this virtual camera and scan in from the full view of Italy and the surrounding Mediterranean basin zooming into the island of Sardinia. I do not know where to start with this lab. The full map is in my scene and do not know where to go from there. On the positive side, I have the time and UV developments loaded into my flash movie for my final project. I am hoping to ask for help on Wednesday night. Although, I am sure there will be a line of students looking for solutions and suggestions, just like me.

Lab 9

Well... I've finished. But I am not sure it is correct. I am going to post the map. But I think I still need some hand-holding and a few more hours.

Map trip to Baltimore

On Friday I went to Baltimore to enjoy the Map exposition on display at the Waters Gallery. Unfortunately, I was unable to join the class/GMU field trip. Since I couldn't go with the group, I was happy to make the trip myself.
I viewed every floor of the gallery. The fourth floor exhibit contained local maps. Most of the maps were made by local high school students about information in their neighborhood. The third floor had a large mosaic map of Europe. I saw an ancient mosaic like this one displayed in a church in the middle east a few years back. The second floor had a gallery room of photo graphs collected by the Hubble telescope. I could have stayed in this room for hours! The photographs were beautiful. However, I view the photographs as art, not map. There were more photographs from the Hubble displayed in a ballroom gallery on the third floor. The main map display is on the ground level. I enjoyed viewing some of the popular and well-known maps of modern and ancient time. The rooms were absolutely FULL of school children on Friday. A docent (who was very nice, by-the-way) told me that the map display had " really raised attendance to the museum". He seemed surprised that so many people would be interested in looking at old maps. The hand-craft skill that making these maps requires is amazing. I am so dependent on cut-n-paste and shape files, that the art of map making is a mystery to me.
Thank you for the suggestion to visit the Waters Gallery in Baltimore. I enjoyed the afternoon.

Labs 7&8

Instead of continuing on the German Invasion Map, I have applied the labs to my semester project. The splash screen of my project will acquaint the viewer with the geographical location of the Island of Sardinia. Additionally, the viewer will have the ability to access other sites that offer information on ultra-violet radiation monitoring.

The base map for the splash screen is from Google. Once the viewer accesses the UVI, the map of Sardinia is saved as an .shp file. The data will be attached from an ArcMap file.

Thanks for reading.

Lab 2 Review

This exercise is really good because of the repetition. Having to go through each of the 20 weeks made the technique "sink in". I did very well till I got to section 12. From there I was in quick sand. The buttons are on my map. But, they don't work. And worse, they are so wrong that I am not able to publish the map that I did finish in HTML format. So, I have posted the map as a jpeg file. And will hopefully fix all the bugs tonight in the lab.

Lab 1 Review

Wow! Flash is so much easier to use/navigate than ArcGis. There are few issues that I am not completely happy with my map about, but still. Like I said it is a lot easier than ArcGis.

Maybe someone knows a way to select several states at the the same time. In other programs I hold down the shift key. Selecting each state individually seemed like I was missing some trick.

I made my map with all the states that are participating in Super Tuesday. Since Super Tuesday hasn't happened yet, I am not sure how we are supposed to make the states with a D or R win. I filled each of the Super Tuesday participating states. I hope this is acceptable.

Additionally, I had trouble making the legend. Basically, I couldn't.

Even still, I am SO much happier with this program and the directions we are provided. ArcGis made me cry.

Have a great day.

I like the political map of the 2007 primary. It is active because the reader can scroll across the dates and the state/s with a primary on that date will highlight. I was interested in which states participate in "Super Tuesday" and this map was a good visual reference.

The Montana Map was just funny to me. It is an old map published in the New Yorker. My husband is from Montana, so it gave me a tid-bit of amunition to tease him. This map is also a good before-and-after comparison of cartography. It might be best described as cartoongraphy. I hope my maps look better than this at the end of the semester.

PS- As the family photographer, there are few photos of me. I will replace my blog photo later in the semester, once I have a more professional look.
